| What has been the biggest challenge in organizing and managing your wiki? | Building a core group of contributors from the community. The core content was built by a single organizer. Then, a contact for each product or service was contacted to review the content and to revise the profile, as needed. Some have reviewed their profiles and made no changes. Others have updated their profiles and contributed other content to the site (e.g., added case studies to the webliography). Some requested the wiki organizer to make specific updates to their profiles. Some did not respond. It was originally built for update by Invitation Only to ensure the most accurate data by the actual product and service contacts for site visitors and to discourage vandalism (e.g., competitors from sabotauging others’ content, spammers, etc). However, the site may be opened to public edit in the future. |
| What do you think are the benefits in using wikis? | The ease in creating web-based content, particularly among group members, especially those who have no technical expertise in developing websites The ease in obtaining feedback and input from multiple people |
| Can you give any specific examples of how your wiki might have demonstrated value (e.g., time savings, cost savings, building connections) to its community? | Working on that—-it is one of a very few directories of survey software on the Internet. None of the others offer the capability for visitors to post feedback on the products / services or to post descriptions of how the software / service was used (e.g., survey profiles). None of the other sites appear to have content managed by representatives of the software products or hosting services. |
| What advice can you give in selecting a host for your wiki? | Find a hosting service that is very active, one where you can view examples of wikis and one that you see is actively maintained (e.g., new features being added, support available) Find a hosting service that meets your needs - a WYSIWYG user interface (so that you don't have to learn wiki syntax), allows you to lock pages if necessary, allows you to add cool content easily (e.g., images, videos, music) |
| What advice can you give in organizing the wiki? | I contacted professional organizations who use survey software and survey hosting services, asking them to add the site to their Links pages, to promote the site in their newsletters, and to join the Contributor team (e.g., as an advisor, a reviewer, etc). I sent notes to some professors who teach courses that might use online survey software or survey hosting services—-offering the site for project work. The site was recently added (by someone else) to WikiIndex—I’ve refined its entry. I’m looking for other wiki index sites too. I’m looking for ways to increase site visitors and contributors. If you have suggestions, post a comment by "starting a new thread" at the bottom of the page |
| What advice can you give in managing the content on the wiki? | Start with some content so that visitors see some content there that has value to them. |
| What advice can you give on promoting the wiki and obtaining visitors from the intended audience? | Promote wikis in your organization or group Promote your wiki in places where potential contributors visit Demo your wiki to friends and others who might have an interest in the topic (e.g., club meetings) Register your wiki in wiki directories Keep the wiki active by adding and revising content frequently |
| What advice can you give to an individual or team who is considering the creation of a wiki? | It’s easy. It’s fun. You can usually find a host site where the wiki can be created at NO cost. This is a great place to start on Wetpaint. Hopefully this site will be helpful to you in encouraging use of wikis and will provide good advice from other wiki organizers. |
| What other wikis do you organize or do you contribute content? | This site, Wild About Wikis |
